While the platinum blonde look works for the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Donatella Versace, and Jared Leto in Fight Club, coral bleaching is a MASSIVE man-made problem plaguing our oceans today.
When corals are stressed by issues such as ubiquitous changes in water temperature, nutrient availability, or accessibility to light they expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues. This causes them to turn completely white, which is known as coral bleaching.
Not only is the destruction of this beautiful aquatic flora calamitous in its own right, but it is also devastating to the marine life that lives and feeds within and amongst the coral reefs. In fact, coral reefs are one of the most biologically diverse and precious ecosystems on Planet Earth. A whooping 25% of ALL marine life, including over 4,000 species of fish, are dependent upon reefs at some point in their life cycle.
